American Water, the largest publicly-traded U.S. water and wastewater utility and WRA member, received one of the highest accolades in Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) excellence – earning a #1 rank from the S&P Global Ratings ESG Report.

Headquartered in Camden, New Jersey, American Water reduced its greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 31% through 2018, and is on target to meet a 40% reduction by 2025. The company reduced annual water usage by 3.3 billion gallons through conservation, and also recycles over a billion gallons of water a year. They committed to invest $8.5 billion to upgrade aging infrastructure, reduce and eliminate leaks, improve cyber and physical security, and increase resiliency of critical assets against the impacts of climate variability.

Earlier this year, Barron’s Magazine named American Water as one of the 100 Most Sustainable Companies.

ESG ratings vary in methodology, but in general they characterize how well a company has integrated sustainability risk into its overall operations. ESG ratings can have major consequences. According to Morningstar, interest in ESG-related funds sky-rocketed in 2019, with total investment topping $1trn for the first time on record. In the United States, mutual funds focused on sustainable investing attracted more than $20 billion in assets in 2019, quadrupling from 2018.

”Consumers want to purchase products from companies that reflect their values — environmental protection, the empowerment of women, or the absence of child labor, for example. Investors, meanwhile, want to know if they are financing activities that might pose a reputational risk.” – MIT Sloan School of Management.
